Teaching and Living in Yangiobod, Jizzakh, Uzbekistan: My 9-Month Experience

When people think about teaching abroad, popular destinations like China, South Korea, or Thailand often come to mind. But for me, my first international teaching job brought me somewhere unique and unforgettable—Yangiobod, a village in Jizzakh, Uzbekistan.

For nine months, I lived, taught, and immersed myself in a completely different culture that welcomed me with open arms. Yangiobod wasn’t just my workplace—it became my home.

Life in Yangiobod, Jizzakh

Yangiobod is a small village in Jizzakh region, Uzbekistan, where community life thrives. Unlike big cities, here people know each other well, and there’s a strong sense of connection. Walking through the village meant warm greetings, smiles, and sometimes even invitations to sit down for tea or a meal.

One of the things that touched me most was the kindness and generosity of the people. I was invited to weddings, birthday parties, and family celebrations, each filled with traditional music, dancing, and delicious Uzbek food. For someone far from home, those gatherings made me feel like part of the family.

Teaching in Uzbekistan: A Rewarding Experience

As a teacher in Yangiobod, I had the privilege of working with students who were curious, energetic, and eager to learn English. The parents and community members were incredibly supportive, treating me not just as a teacher but as a friend and guest.

This was my first international teaching job, and it shaped me in ways I’ll always carry with me. I am deeply grateful to the people of Yangiobod for welcoming me and making me feel at home.

Experiencing Winter and Spring in Uzbekistan

Coming from the Philippines, where we only have wet and dry seasons, one of the biggest highlights of my stay was experiencing winter and spring for the very first time.

  • Winter in Jizzakh: The entire village turned into a snowy wonderland. I’ll never forget the thrill of seeing snow fall outside my window, hearing the crunch beneath my boots, and learning to embrace the cold.

  • Spring in Jizzakh: As the snow melted, the village bloomed with vibrant flowers and greenery. The air felt fresh, and life seemed to begin anew—a truly inspiring season of change.

These two seasons gave me memories I could never experience back home, and they remain some of my favorite moments in Uzbekistan.

Why Yangiobod Will Always Be Special to Me

Yangiobod is more than just a place on the map—it’s a chapter of my life I will never forget. It was my first time living abroad, my first international job, and my first taste of life in a village so different yet so welcoming.

The warmth of the people, the celebrations I was part of, and the beauty of experiencing new seasons made my nine months in Jizzakh one of the most meaningful journeys of my life.

Final Thoughts: Teaching Abroad in Uzbekistan

If you’re considering teaching English in Uzbekistan or simply curious about life in Jizzakh, know that it’s a destination full of genuine people, rich traditions, and unique experiences. It may not be as widely talked about as other teaching destinations, but it has a charm and authenticity that’s hard to find elsewhere.

For me, Yangiobod will always hold a special place in my heart—a reminder that sometimes the most unexpected destinations leave the most unforgettable memories.
